Microsoft announced that they will be discontinuing Windows Live OneCare and releasing their own antivirus software very soon. Given the codename, “Morro,” the new software will be a competitor to the major antivirus software makers like Symantec and McAfee.

The main goal of this software is to remove trojans, spyware and viruses. That’s it. It’s currently undergoing testing and is likely to see a beta very soon for the public. What’s interesting, is this antivirus software will be free for Windows users, which is likely to stick a thorn in the side of its competitors.

Microsoft tried the antivirus market before with their OneCare bundle, though it required an annual fee. It never really took hold, so now the free price tag is likely to bring in added value for sure..

I have a feeling it will fail like always. ^^

Yeah.... this sounds like bloatware to me.  The best anti-virus is:

  1. Dont check strange emails
  2. Dont Install Pirated Software
  3. Dont Watch ***.

Of course, that would pretty much get rid of about 80% of the internet traffic if everyone followed that advice lol.  Smile

More like 99%. Anyways this is great cause microsoft's done such a good job with security in the past![/sarcasm] This is doomed to fail, it's just gonna be one of those stupid anti viruses idiots leave on their computer when they buy a new one and never end up getting a real anti-virus program just like the ones who use windows firewall. I doubt anyone will actually buy this one (well few will). It may however hurt some legitimate antivirus companies profits.

Anyways like Brice said, long as you stay away from shady sites and use your noggin you shouldn't be getting any viruses in the first place.

Either way you just need a virus scanner with a high detection rate, cause really I havn't met a virus scanner yet that could remove a real virus without help.
